It’s easy to think of business as something that only happens in the boardroom, but business is all around us. Business is an idea that creates opportunities, shapes history, and changes lives. Welcome to BUS100. Over the next 11 weeks, you’ll learn the foundational principles of any business and how they fit together to help companies thrive in a competitive world. From the NBA to the corner deli, you’ll hear true stories of business insiders and learn the skills you need to succeed in business, at school, and in life.

Lessons

Every course consists of 11 week-long lessons. In this course demo, several lessons with their full content are featured.

What is Business?

Business is all around you. You interact with it each and every day. From the place you work to the products you buy to the food that you eat, business is the thing that connects you to the goods and services you need and want.

Product Development

This week, you’ll be introduced to Rochelle and her amazing company, Alikay Naturals. With her story as inspiration, you’ll learn about Product Development and explore its application to your day-to-day life.

Operations

You’ll be introduced to the topic of Operations, the process for creating and delivering a product to customers, and continue discussions with your peers about the products you use at home.

Finance

You’ll hear the story of Shaun and Rachel, and how finance knowledge has been critical to the success of their company. You’ll learn key finance terms and explore the lessons you’ve learned from your own financial decisions.

Accounting

Learning from Shaun and Rachel, we’ll dig deeper into accounting. We’ll look at how three key financial statements are created and how they can be used by businesses to make financial decisions.

Intro to Marketing

You’ll meet Elisa, the chief marketing officer of the Brooklyn Nets, and learn about how she used marketing concepts to create a successful new brand.

Marketing and Sales

This week, you’ll be introduced to the role of both brand and sales in supporting marketing efforts. You’ll also continue discussions with your peers about the effectiveness of celebrity endorsements in advertising.

Management

You’ll be introduced to Paul and Ari of Zingerman’s Delicatessen and community of businesses. You’ll explore how critical people are to an organization and the key characteristics of a successful manager.

Leadership

You’ll be introduced to the importance of leadership to a successful business. In discussions with your peers, you’ll also continue to explore the key characteristics of a successful manager.

Competition

Learn about Netflix and how they’ve worked to outpace the competition. You’ll be introduced to the role competition plays in driving business and explore with your peers businesses that are competing today.

Wrap-Up

The past ten weeks have been jammed-pack with valuable insights and information that you can begin applying right now. You’ve learned the skills and tools for taking charge of your career—no matter the path you choose.

Assessment Overview

Assignment 1

Learners will play the role of a Category Manager for Beauty Products at Target tasked with helping Alikay Naturals determine whether to improve or replace one of their products.

Assignment 2

Learners will play the role of a senior accountant for SunsTruck tasked with selecting the best financing option to expand the business and preparing the necessary reports to do so.

Assignment 3

Learners will play the role of a marketing manager at a discount retail store tasked with evaluating a marketing plan for the sale of basketballs

Assignment 4

Learners will play the role of a Leadership Consultant tasked with helping a national discount retail store to improve its in-store restaurant management team.
